High Tides, High Hopes

In the 50′ and 60’s, many Newfoundlanders living in remote  outport island communities were forced to move under a government program called Resettlement.

This meant a tearing apart of community and neighbourhoods, the heartache of leaving  ancestral homes and the end of a self-sufficient way of life. Some who had built their homes, refused to abandon them and rebuild. So by barge, boat, blood, sweat and tears they floated to their new foundations and new beginnings.

This particular home was relocated to Dover, Newfoundland. The house belonged to Mr. Malcolm Rogers who used empty oil drums to relocate his family from Silver Fox Island during the resettlement program.

In current times resettlement still happens by way of community majority vote, as seen in Great Harbour Deep in 2002,  Grand Bruit in 2010, and most recently Little Bay Island in 2019. Under current guidelines, at least 90% of permanent residents must accept the ‘offer’ for settlement to more centrally located towns.
