Thorn to be Wild

$32.00$3,161.00

Thorn to be Wild is a play on words from Born to be Wild, the popular song from the 1960’s  by Steppenwolf. The Three Sisters and The Bow River were indeed born to be wild, and when you add in the prickly pink wild roses…well, you can see how the title fits.
A big thanks to Hubby Geoff for coaxing this title out of his beautiful brain.
The Three Sisters stand proudly in the background of beautiful pink wild roses as viewed from the Bow River in Canmore, Alberta.

The Alberta wild rose, officially known as Rosa acicularis or prickly rose, is Alberta’s provincial flower. It was designated the official floral emblem of Alberta in 1930, symbolizing strength, resilience, and natural beauty.

The Three Sisters are a trio of peaks of the Canadian Rockies that sit behind the town of  Canmore, Alberta, Canada. The peaks have been named twice. In 1883, Albert Rogers, a surveyor working on the Canadian Pacific Railway, dubbed them the Three Nuns after seeing them covered in a veil of snow . Three years later, the geologist George Dawson called them the Three Sisters and the name stuck.
In the traditional language of The Nakoda( Îyârhe Nakoda or Stoney), the peaks are also referred to as the three sisters, referring to a story of Ĩ-ktomnĩ (the old man or trickster) who would promise ‘three sisters’ in marriage whenever he was in trouble.

They are known individually as Big Sister, Middle Sister and Little Sister and are easily spotted from the Bow River Valley section of the Trans-Canada Highway.

This trio of peaks has a significant role in the town of Canmore, tourism, and hiking in the area. The Three Sisters may be the most recognized peaks in the Bow River Valley.

For this artist, this painting represents acceptance, pride and love for my new Alberta home.

We recognize the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy, Tsuut’ina Nation, and Îyârhe Nakoda (Stoney Nakoda) Nations, as well as the Métis people and the signatory nations in Treaty 7 territory.
